Description

The Old Convent is a three-storey, three-bay house built in the late Victorian classical style. The lower storey features rusticated ashlar stonework, while the upper storeys are made of coursed rock-faced Pennant sandstone with lighter ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. The hipped slate roof has projecting eaves supported by corbels and a plain cornice. On the right side, there are two ashlar chimney stacks, and on the left side, there is a single stack. Most of the windows are two-pane sashes.

The central doorway is framed by two pairs of Corinthian columns that support an entablature, and it features a half-glazed door with a plain overlight. Above the door is a keyed segmental window set within an architrave, topped with a segmental pediment on consoles and a relief-moulded tympanum. The outer bays are highlighted by two-storey canted bay windows, which have Corinthian pilasters at the corners of the lower storey. The windows in these bays have segmental-headed lights with keystones, and the lower left window retains stained glass from a former chapel. Both bays also have an open balustraded parapet. The upper storey contains five windows with eared architraves and key stones, including a central two-pane sash window flanked by cross windows on the right and left.

The left side wall is constructed of Pennant sandstone with rusticated quoins and features openings that are offset to the left. These include two segmental-headed sash windows in the lower and middle storeys, separated by an ashlar band, and a triple sash window in the upper storey with segmental-headed lights. A lower rear wing is present, and a YMCA building is attached to the right side, which was formerly part of Our Lady's Convent School. The property has not been inspected.
