Description

Roath Park United Reform Church is a chapel built of rock-faced Pennant sandstone with Bath stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. The building features a gable front and includes a three-stage tower at the south corner, which was originally four stages with corner pinnacles. A schoolroom has been added to the northwest side. The church is designed in a decorated Gothic style, with the main front divided into three bays by stepped buttresses, the tower being one of the end bays. Each bay has a gabled and pointed arch doorway, and above the central doorway is a large, five-light window with geometric tracery. There is a small single-light window in the upper part of the north bay. The tower contains a single rectangular window at the second stage and a two-light decorated window at the upper stage. The side elevation features tall, two-light decorated windows in the first four bays, with three-light rectangular windows at ground floor level and short, two-light decorated windows at the first floor level of the last two bays. The adjoining schoolroom is gable-fronted and built with similar materials.

Inside, the church has raked galleries on three sides, with decorative cast iron fronts. The rear gallery extends over the entrance vestibule and up to the five-light west window. Round, cast iron columns support the galleries at ground floor level and the roof trusses at gallery level. The ceiling is a handsome, high, five-bay timber boarded design, supported by arch-braces and tie-beams, featuring a flat centre section and steeply sloping ceilings over the side galleries. Decorative wood ventilators are present in the centre section of the ceiling. The ground floor is slightly sloping and contains original timber pews, which are canted at the sides, providing seating for 650. Polished timber rails are located in the 'set fawr' area in front of the pulpit. An octagonal wood pulpit with decorative inlaid panels and a polished and panelled wood front to the choir area was added in 1945. The original organ and pipes are housed in a pointed arched recess behind the choir. Some windows in the side walls feature coloured glass with Art Nouveau motifs. The adjoining schoolroom includes classrooms at a lower level and a large hall at the upper level.
