Description
This is a two-storey terrace of ten cottages, numbered 4 to 22, built in the 18th century and opening directly onto the pavement. The cottages are constructed of narrow coursed rubble with stone voussoirs around the window and door openings, regular dressed stone quoins, and the side elevations are rendered. They have a Welsh slate roof with narrow red brick ridge stacks, each featuring three pots. With the exception of number 14, the central left unit, each cottage has a single window range and a front door. Number 14 has a three-window range and a central front door, indicating the presence of a central staircase within.
Originally, the cottages had small-pane sash windows, which have been largely replaced with two-light casements on the first floor and transomed casements on the ground floor. Some of the new windows have rendered surrounds, while others have slightly cambered heads, and all windows have replacement doors. A low masonry revetment slopes down to the right of the terrace.
Originally, the staircases rose beside the fireplace in the front room of each cottage, with the exception of the main staircase in number 14. Some original stone flagged floors and slabs remain from the former pantries. The ground floor ceilings are supported by thin joists, and some of these are exposed.
