Description
16 Merthyr Road is a two-storey terrace of ten cottages that open directly onto the pavement. The cottages are constructed of narrow coursed rubble with stone voussoirs around the door and window openings, and they feature regularly dressed stone quoins. The sides are rendered, and the roofs are covered with Welsh slate, topped with narrow red brick ridge corniced stacks, each with three pots.
With the exception of number 14, the centre left unit, the front elevations of each cottage have a single window and a door, with a ground floor layout consisting of two rooms arranged one behind the other. Number 14 has a three-window range and a central door, along with a central staircase layout. The original windows were likely small-pane sash windows, but most have been replaced with two-light casements on the first floor and transomed casements on the ground floor. Some of these have rendered surrounds, while others feature slightly cambered heads; the doors have also been replaced. The cottages are set behind a low masonry revetment that slopes down to the right.
Originally, staircases rose beside the front room fireplace in most cottages (except for the central staircase in number 14), with some of these staircases still retained. There are also some stone flagged floors and slabs from former pantries, and the ground floor ceiling joists are of thin scantling, with some exposed.
