Description

3 Bute Place is a building designed in the Italian Renaissance style, featuring three storeys and ten windows on the main south elevation. It is constructed of red brick with red sandstone dressings sourced from Shawk quarries in Cumberland, and has grey Penrhyn granite columns. The hipped slate roof is adorned with red sandstone chimneys. A sandstone cornice with a balustrade and a central aedicule crowns the structure.

On the second floor, there are segmental-headed windows with sandstone architraves that include keystones. The sandstone cornice is positioned at sill level. The first floor windows also have sandstone architraves, with triangular pediments supported by brackets above them. The ground floor is faced in red sandstone, featuring round-headed doorways in the fourth and seventh bays, which have panelled double doors topped with semi-circular fanlights. The remaining bays consist of round-headed windows with keystones above and panelled aprons below. The ground floor is articulated by grey granite columns in the Roman Doric style, which are doubled at the ends of the facade.

An entablature supports a balustraded parapet that rises to the first floor sill level, with the central four bays projecting forward to form a porch. The wall behind the porch is accented with granite pilasters, and the centre two bays of the porch project with doubled columns at the ends. The east return features five bays in the same style, but the first floor windows have flat cornices instead of triangular pediments, and there is no balustrading below the sills. Doubled granite pilasters are present at the south end of the elevation.

At the rear, the elevation is made of red brick with camber-headed windows, and there is a two-storey wing with similar treatment. Facing Dock Lane to the east, the yard is enclosed by a brick wall with sandstone coping and tall sandstone gatepiers. To the north of the gates, there is an outbuilding with a shaped gable and a tall brick chimney.

Inside, to the right of the portico, there is an impressive staircase with cast iron banisters in a Grecian style. A similar staircase can be seen through doors to the left of the portico.
