Description

The Royal Oak Public House is a 19th-century establishment constructed from brown rock-faced stone with painted dressings and band courses, topped with hipped slate roofs featuring terracotta cresting and brick chimneys. The main three-storey corner block has four windows facing Broadway and four windows facing Beresford Road, with a splayed one-window corner bay. The upper floors are adorned with 12-pane horned sash windows, while the ground floor features large windows with three-centred arches. On the Broadway elevation, the second arch from the left is a doorway, and there is a corner doorway as well. On the Beresford Road elevation, the left arch serves as another doorway. The bar windows on Beresford Road, behind modern glass, contain old stained glass panels with inscriptions such as “Irish & Scotch Whiskies.” Above all three entrances, there is a lantern mounted on a bracket. The lower two-storey, four-window wing on Beresford Road is built with the same materials and features twelve-pane sash windows on the first floor, along with camber-headed tripartite sash windows on the ground floor. A contemporary flat-roofed WC extension is located at the rear.

Inside, the pub retains much of its original character and is still divided into separate rooms. Original bar fittings are present, and the lobby at the Broadway entrance has timber partitions. The long bar facing Beresford Street has an archway leading to the rear bar, which features stained glass. Some cornices and ceiling roses are also preserved.
