Description

This is a two-storey, single-depth cottage dating from an unknown period, with attached garden walls. The cottage is constructed of whitewashed local rubble stone, with a combed wheat reed thatched roof. It has stone stacks at each end and a larger stack in the centre.

The north-east facing street elevation features a series of windows. The first window is a two-light ground floor window with a probable original moulded stone frame and dripstone, although the mullion is missing, and containing four panes by four. Above it is a two-light casement window with small panes and a wooden lintel. A sash window with three panes wide and four deep is located to the right. The first floor above this has a two-light casement window with four panes by four and a timber lintel. A projecting stone porch with a half-hipped thatched roof and modern gable boarding is situated further along the front. Finally, there is a two-light casement window on both the ground and first floors.

A lower, former outbuilding range of one storey and loft is attached to the south-west end. It has whitewashed stone rubble walls and a gabled slate roof. The outbuilding includes a sash window with horns, a central doorway with stone voussoirs and wooden boarded half-doors, a small casement window, and two roof-lights. A loft window is in the south-west gable, and a slit window is in the rear elevation.

The rear elevation is set into a bank and largely featureless. There is a small window to the right of the door and a small casement within a projection that housed a mural stair.

The front garden of the main house is enclosed by a stone wall, dating from the 18th to 19th centuries, with gate piers constructed of blocks of stone topped with pyramidal coping, and a stone stile in the south return. A forecourt to the former adjoining outbuilding is also enclosed by a stone wall with rough stone coping. The rear garden is enclosed on the north-west and north-east sides by high stone walls, also dating from the 18th to 19th centuries.

The interior was only partially inspected, but the north-east ground floor room is said to have stopped and chamfered door jambs, a fireplace with a stopped and chamfered bressumer, three massive stopped and chamfered ceiling beams, and square joists. A blocked early window is located in the east wall, and there is a stone fireplace stair. A ground floor room to the south-west of the porch is described as having a large fireplace and exposed ceiling joists. The slotted rafters of this building are a unique feature in the county, confirmed by the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments Wales (RCAHMW).
