Description
The Causeway is a two-storey house dating from the late 18th century, constructed with a single-depth plan and a rear service wing. The front elevation features a ground floor of exposed limestone rubble and a first floor with cemented cladding, topped by a gabled Welsh slate roof. Beginning from the north-east end, the front has a late 20th-century two-light casement with a cambered stone head and voussoirs on the ground floor, with a small modern window above. An original doorway with an arched head and straight-edged jamb is present, alongside a modern window on the first floor. Further along, a three-light modern window sits within an old arched head, and above it a late 20th-century two-light casement. Beyond this, the base of the ground floor is slightly set back, featuring modern two-light casements with wooden lintels on both ground and first floors, with a square-headed doorway and wooden lintel to the right. 19th-century stone stacks are located at the left-hand end of the house and to the left of the central section. The right-hand gable is blind. The rear elevation has not been observed.
The interior was not inspected at resurvey but appears to have remained unaltered since its original listing. The northeast ground floor room features a ceiling with straight-edged joists and a large fireplace with a stopped and chamfered jamb and a bread oven in the northeast wall. The southeast wall has two doorways with stone voussoirs and straight-edged jambs, one leading to a stone stair. A passageway doorway exhibits a stone stopped and chamfered jamb, with the upper part likely rebuilt in brick and cemented over. The middle room contains three massive stopped and chamfered beams with stopped and chamfered joists. The fireplace in the middle room has a chamfered wood bressumer, stopped to the left only, with a left-hand stone stopped and chamfered jamb and a stone staircase. A stone southwest doorway of the middle upper floor room has an arched head and straight-edged jamb. The rear kitchen wing includes a two-light mullioned window.
Historical records, including a plan from the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales, show that the original house had an end entry into a hall with a firestair and an unheated inner room. It was extended to the east with a kitchen, separated from the passage by a stone partition – a unique feature in Glamorgan. This added room has a mural stair, and another room sits behind it.
