Description
Ty'n y Cellar is a house and adjoining barn, largely dating from the late 18th century. The house faces east, away from the farmyard, and has a rear wing and a late 20th-century extension to the north. The front facade has been remodelled using snecked stone, whilst the remainder of the house is constructed of rubble stone, all under red pan-tile roofs. Brick end stacks are present on the main range and the rear wing. The symmetrical front features a central gabled porch with a flat-headed opening leading to a half-lit front door, and a small two-light casement window above. Flanking bays have gabled half-dormers containing tall two-light casements with lying panes, set under stone lintels, with similar windows below. The late 20th-century extension mimics the style of the rest of the house, but is lower in height, with two full gabled dormers. It incorporates French doors and a ground-floor window. The rear of the house includes a lean-to porch situated between the rear wing and a lean-to against the barn, containing double planked doors. The south side of the rear wing has a planked door to the left, a two-light casement window centrally located under a voussoir head, and two upper-storey windows with flat stone lintels. A small light is visible in the west gable end. A lean-to is present on the north side, with a 20th-century window where a door previously stood.
Adjoining the south side of the house is a five-bay rubble stone barn under a slate roof. The barn has blocked openings connecting to the house and two further blocked openings. A porch is located on the west side, in the second bay from the left, leading to a cart-passage. This porch has a catslide roof and full-height double planked doors. A long lean-to, now incorporated into the house, extends to the left, featuring a catslide roof, a rendered front, and a truncated brick stack. A two-light UPVC window is visible on the south side. To the right of the porch are two ventilation slits, one of which is blocked, and a row of three recesses. A planked loft hatch is located in the south gable end, with two ventilation slits below. The east side of the barn features lower double planked doors under a flat arch of voussoirs, flanked by two ventilation slits to the left and one to the right, which has been filled with brick. The barn’s roof utilizes a simple collar-truss structure, which is not original to the building. A loft to the north of the cart-passage is supported on cross beams. There was no access to the house at the time of inspection on July 29, 1999.
