Description

The Old Guildhall, formerly an annexe to Dynevor Comprehensive School, is a two-storey building with a six-bay entrance front made of Bath stone. The ends of the building are advanced, featuring aedicules on the first floor and paired centre bays with three-quarter columns. It has a deep cornice to the entablature, although the dentils have been removed, and solid parapets above, where balustrades and urns have also been removed. The columns are linked by cill bands, with block pedestals, and the ground floor displays channelled rustication beneath a band course.

The tall round-arched windows are adorned with architraves, lion masks, and heads at the keyblocks, along with impost bands and sash windows that include glazing bars. The ground floor openings feature keyblocks and recessed frames, with twin pilastered doorcases that have volutes leading to arched architraves, blind lunettes, and double panelled doors. The centre spandrel displays the carved arms of the Borough of Swansea. There are later three-storey extensions on the left side, which have large ground floor arches that conceal the original rear elevations.

The south elevation consists of nine bays with similar detailing, including a three-bay centre. The upper floor glazing has been altered, while the ground floor features sash windows and area railings. There is a three-bay return elevation that is part of a larger design on the east side, with two-storey later extensions. Attached galleried ranges to the north and east of the east courtyard are not of special interest.

Inside, the building retains fine classical detailing, particularly in the main lateral staircase, which has an arched coffered ceiling. The top flight features a trabeated columned archway flanked by niches, leading to a monumental entrance hall with a ribbed ceiling and massive doorcases. The former Council Chamber and Court Rooms I and II, located en suite on the first floor, exhibit good classical interiors. The ground floor includes vaulted rooms and passages, as well as brick cells at the rear. The building was disused at the time of the survey in October 1985.
