Description
Tyrywen is a two-storey house built into a slope, featuring a lower wing on the right that forms an L-plan facing a yard. The main house is constructed of rubble sandstone and has a noticeable batter, with limewashed elevations facing the yard. It has a slate roof and a renewed stone stack at one end. The wing has a stone tile roof and 19th-century stone stacks positioned left of center and to the right.
The main house has a single window facing the yard, with casements set in 19th-century openings. The doorway is located to the right of center and is likely a 19th-century addition, featuring a boarded and ribbed door within an added gabled porch that has a stone tile roof. The wing presents a two-window front with casements in earlier openings, and a central full-height butt joint indicates two phases of construction. To the right, there is an inserted doorway with a concrete lintel, also featuring a 19th-century boarded and ribbed door. The right gable end displays hammer-dressed quoins and has a half-round projecting oven beneath a lean-to stone roof. The rear of the wing is single-storey and includes an inserted central doorway.
On the uphill gable end, there is a single upper-storey casement. The rear side wall features a casement in an original opening on the lower left, beneath a drip stone (serving the service room), and a small casement in the center of the upper storey. An added lean-to conservatory has a doorway leading into the house. The downhill gable end has a blocked stair light to the right and casements to the left in earlier openings, with the lower storey possibly replacing the original doorway. The building was not inspected at the time of the survey in November 1997.
