Description

The three lime kilns at Goytre Wharf are Grade II listed structures made of neatly squared and coursed local sandstone rubble. The right-hand kiln is positioned slightly forward and higher than the other two, suggesting it may be a later addition, though it shares the same design and workmanship. Each of the three double kilns features paired semi-circular openings for the fire-holes, with neatly cut voussoirs and keystones above them. There is a weathered string course and a plain wall that supports the bank of the charge-holes. The right-hand pair of kilns is separated by a flight of stone steps and is more robustly buttressed at the right end. The charge bank is located next to an arm of the canal, which serves as a dock and quay for coal and limestone.
