Description
The Clock Tower in Carmarthen Market is a square tower built in the Italianate style, consisting of two storeys and constructed from brown rubble stone, which was likely originally stuccoed. The tower features arched openings and has a hipped slate roof topped with a large square timber clock turret.
The lower section of the tower has battered angle piers at the ground floor, with an arched window on the north and south sides, and an arched door on the west side. All these openings are adorned with ashlar impost and key blocks, as well as stone sills. Above, there is a double band that frames three inset panels, although there are no inset panels on the east side.
On the first floor, there is a triple arched feature on the north, south, and west sides, which includes brick arches and stone imposts and keys. The two outer panels are blank, while the centre features small-paned sash windows. A stone impost band encircles the tower, with a raised band beneath a deep eaves cornice that has closely spaced painted brackets supporting the overhanging roof.
The turret has a short lower stage with two small windows on each face, leading up to the clock stage, which has a clock face recessed within a circular frame set in a square panel. The top of the turret has wide overhanging eaves with shaped brackets and vent louvres in between, all beneath a pyramid slate roof topped with a ball finial and a weather vane.
