Description
The Old Smithy is a building with an L-shaped plan, featuring varying heights. The tallest section is located at the angle, with a single-storey extension that projects towards the street. There is a wing on the right side, which has a lean-to structure against it at the right end. The exterior is made of whitewashed rubble, with a corrugated-iron roof on the taller section and the wing. The lower part facing the street has a slate roof laid with gaps using the economical 'to'r brat' technique. There is a rubble chimney stack for the main working hearth and a brick stack for the cottage. The windows in the lower range are casement style, while the cottage features horned sash windows and wide boarded doors supported by an iron girder.
Inside, the walls are made of rubble. The three-bay roof in the higher section retains significant remnants of thatching, supported by curved principals that spring from projecting timber corbels. The bay closest to the street has infilled trusses. At the far end, there is a broad hearth that is said to have a timber lintel and a stepped flue. The lower extension has a two-bay A-frame roof, a blocked doorway at the rear, and a brick-bordered recess at the gable end, which likely once housed another working hearth. Access to the right-angled range is through a door next to the main hearth, which has an altered interior and includes a cottage-type kitchen range at the east gable. The building has been disused at times of inspection, and the interior was not fully accessible during the latter visit.
