Description
The lychgate to St Peter's Churchyard is a gabled Gothic structure built from rock-faced squared red Runcorn sandstone, featuring ashlar dressings made from the same stone. It has a low raised plinth, a pointed arch, an ashlar-coped roof, and a Celtic cross finial. Low gabled buttresses are positioned at right angles on each side. The arch has plain splayed sides with mouldings that die into the structure, a hoodmould with a finial above, and is linked below to a stringcourse. Another stringcourse runs over the hoodmould beneath a framed inscribed plaque in the gable. The apex features a trefoil with the arms of a lion rampant. Although the lettering on the plaque is largely decayed, it commemorates Rev. Latimer Maurice Jones and the lychgate's erection by public subscription. Inside, elegant wrought iron gates are present, featuring a rectangular grid with scrollwork and affixed LMJ plaques. The interior ashlar roof has chamfered parallel ribs that die into the sides, and the low walls are made of rock-faced stone. The eastern facade is similar but simpler, with a moulded arch that dies into the splayed side walls.
