Description
Bont-ar-Towy is a Grade II* listed bridge, constructed from coursed rubble stone and featuring five arches in total. The main section of the bridge consists of three broad segmental arches, which are adorned with flush cut stone voussoirs and small coursed stones in the spandrels. There is a band located beneath the parapet. The bridge has raised piers above four triangular cutwaters on each side, topped with stepped triangular features. The outer cutwaters are more decorative, featuring taller half-pyramid tops capped with finials shaped like half spheres divided by a horizontal square slab. While the parapets appear to have been rebuilt, one of them includes a datestone from 1819. The ends of the bridge are finished with rock-faced stone copings and raised ridged blocks at each end.
At the eastern end, there is a simpler two-arch bridge that spans a flood plain, with lower arches and triangular cutwaters supporting the central pier. This section also features small stones in the spandrels but lacks the band under the parapets. The large raised piers at the eastern end are notable, and the parapets at both ends of the bridge extend outward in a splayed manner.
