Description
The former guard house, built around 1840-1845, is constructed from rock-faced grey limestone and features a slate hipped eaves roof with a stone stack at the apex. This two-storey building has a three-window main front, a deep single-storey portico, and set-back two-storey wings with one window each. The walling is distinctive, using large stones on the lower level and smaller stones on the first floor, with grey ashlar dressings that include a plinth, rusticated quoins on the main block, and rusticated surrounds around the openings.
On the first floor, there are three 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor has two arch-headed windows flanking a central arched doorway that features a panelled door and a radiating bar fanlight. The ground floor is set within a deep colonnaded verandah supported by four thin Roman Doric stone columns, which carry a plain two-step cornice and a flat roof. Structural ironwork is visible on the underside of the roof. Each end wall of the main block has a window on each floor, and the set-back wings have a similar 12-pane sash window on the first floor, along with a band and a door with an overlight. There are no angle quoins present.
