Description
Ford Bridge is a 19th-century structure that spans two small tributaries of the Cresswell Estuary, flowing westward. The bridge is approximately 100 meters long and features a junction with the road to Langdon at a point between the streams. It is constructed from local uncoursed rubble masonry, with plain dressed stone used in the arches, which lack keystones or other decorative elements, indicating that the entire structure was built at the same time.
There are long approaches from the north and south, and a shorter approach from the east. The parapets widen significantly at the approaches, particularly on the north side where the road splits for Loveston or Reynoldston. North of the Langdon junction, there are two arches, each with a span of 3 meters, while south of the junction, there is one similar arch. A small cutwater is present on the upstream side between the two arches of the northern stream.
The carriageway measures 3.6 meters in width between the parapets, which are low and feature a roughly pointed coping made of upright stones that directs water outward. Bond-stones are placed at intervals to connect the parapets to the main body of the masonry. Tie-rods have been added across the bridge near the double arch to prevent spreading, but otherwise, the bridge remains unaltered.
