Description

This is a set of five circular cast-iron capstans, built in 1888. They are hand-operated and were designed to move the entrance lock gate and caissons at the exits from the lock and the adjoining dry dock. The top of each capstan is inscribed with '1888 Butterley Company. Single Purchase-Peg In. Double Purchase-Peg Out.'
