Description

This is a set of five circular cast-iron capstans from 1888, which are hand-operated. They are designed to move the entrance lock gate and caissons at the exits from the lock and the adjoining dry dock. The top of each capstan is inscribed with '1888 Butterley Company. Single Purchase-Peg In. Double Purchase-Peg out.'
