Description

This is a set of five circular cast-iron capstans, built in 1888. They are hand-operated and were designed to operate the entrance lock gate and the caissons at the exits from the lock and the adjacent dry dock. Each capstan is inscribed on the top with the words '1888 Butterley Company. Single Purchase-Peg In. Double Purchase-Peg Out.'
