Description
Pen Llwyn House is an L-shaped Georgian house with a stair block within the angle, showcasing a plain design. It faces southwest towards its gardens, with an older farmhouse to the west that has been remodeled as a service wing. The main section of the house has three storeys and a three-window front elevation. It is finished in roughcast, including the older part, with a smooth-rendered plinth. The roof is low-pitched and slated, featuring metal rolls on the hips. There is one chimney at the left end and another rendered chimney at the rear right. The top and first storeys have hornless sash windows with six and twelve panes in recessed frames, while the ground storey features horned sash windows with twelve panes in exposed frames, all with slate sills.
At the front, there is a centrally located open Ionic porch made of timber and stucco, supported by Tuscan pilasters at the back. The porch has a lead-dressed roof over a heavy cornice, and the floor is made of slate. The front door is a four-panel design with two steps and a rectangular overlight featuring margin glazing. The narrow right elevation has similar window detailing. The rear door next to the stair block mirrors the front door but lacks a porch.
The older wing of the house has two storeys and an attic, with a higher pitched roof and a lateral chimney on the north side. It features 19th-century bargeboards and a finial, along with single-storey lean-to and gabled extensions on the west. The sash windows in this section are of late 19th-century style with four panes.
Inside, the best rooms include a dining room to the left of the entrance hallway, which has a painted marble fireplace, and a drawing room to the right with a white marble fireplace. At the rear of the house, there is an impressive straight staircase of exceptional length, featuring a bracketted cut string above a panelled wall, two painted square balusters for each tread, and a mahogany handrail that coils over a baluster cluster surrounding a turned newel. The internal doors are four-panel designs.
