Description
The building is a dovecote, constructed from sandstone rubble masonry that is slightly battered at the base. The masonry technique is a simpler version of that used in the Old Rectory, incorporating small stones to create the course sizes. The corbelled dome is nearly intact, featuring projecting drip-courses at both the base and halfway up the dome. The eye at the apex, which measured about 0.3 meters in diameter in 1920, has since broken away to form a larger opening. The entrance doorway, facing southeast, was originally approximately 0.9 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, but the masonry on its left side was damaged early this century when the building was repurposed as an animal shelter. It includes a stone lintel and a relieving arch.
The walls contain numerous flight holes that penetrate horizontally and appear to be original, aligning with the positions of the nest boxes, although some are blocked. Similar features can be found in Cornwall, but they are not commonly seen in Wales.
Inside, there are 14 rows of 30 stone-built nest boxes, with no potence present. Alighting shelves are located at every third row of holes.
