Description
No 1 Craiglas Lime Kiln is part of a group of four lime kilns built into a bank, connected by rubble stone walls that support the bank. These kilns are made of rubble stone and are approximately 4 meters high, with an unusual rectangular shape. All four kilns have open crucibles that are in poor condition.
Kiln 1, located from the southwest, measures about 7 meters deep and 8 meters wide. It features three tall kiln eyes that are triangular and tapering, standing 2.5 meters high at the front and 2 meters deep. The walled bank extends northeast for approximately 9 meters to kiln 2, which is similar in size to kiln 1 and has similar kiln eyes, but includes rough rubble stone buttresses on each side of the western corner.
Continuing northeast for about 7 meters, kiln 3 is also similar to kiln 1, but has a rough rubble stone buttress on the northwest side of the western corner. Kiln 3 shares a large kiln eye with kiln 4, which is only 1 meter away. Kiln 4 is smaller than the others, measuring only 5 meters wide, and has a rough rubble stone buttress on the northeast side of the northern corner.
To the southeast of kiln 1 is a walled enclosure made of rubble stone, measuring approximately 10 meters by 10 meters and 3 meters high. The wall is 0.5 meters thick and features a large gate with spear-headed iron railings on the northeast side.
Additionally, there are several stone and timber structures on the beach that may have served as quays or shelters for boats unloading lime.
