Description

The site comprises a group of four linked outbuildings forming a courtyard, part of a larger farm and estate complex built for the Thomas family of Llanfair. Dating from 1797 and 1847, the buildings are constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs, mainly two storeys high.

The east and north ranges exhibit a consistent roofline, with the northeast angle of the east range hipped. The interior of the east range is now open to the roof structure. The east range features camber-headed doors and small windows, all with stone voussoirs. It includes an upper loading door towards the south end and a concrete block lean-to against the centre. An arched cartshed entry is located at the north end. The north range has two similar cart entries with windows positioned above, to the northeast angle, followed by a tall barn entry with a cambered arch. The north range then features four well-spaced bays, alternating between doors and windows below, with three windows and a loading door above. The barn incorporates a nine-bay collar truss roof and is lofted for four bays. The roofs of both the north and east ranges are similar, suggesting a construction date around 1847.

The west range, also seemingly from the mid-19th century, includes a lower two-storey outbuilding linking to a larger two-storey block of estate housing. The outbuildings comprise four bays of pigsties, an enclosed section, and a cartshed arch within the northwest angle. The house range initially consisted of three two-window houses, featuring close-spaced arched windows and doors, ashlar voussoirs. One door has been altered to a window. Two broader bays are positioned to the left, incorporating arched cart entries below and matching windows above. These cart entries are now glazed. The windows are small-paned, narrow casements with single-pane fanlights above. A single stone stack is present.

Adjoining the complex to the south is a gabled stone gateway with dove-holes, a large ashlar arch, and wrought iron gates, aligned with a similar entrance gateway at the southeast angle of the courtyard.

The single-storey south range exhibits clear evidence of two periods of construction. The upper section of the left end has six stone-voussoir arches, with a straight joint at the west end, and older pegged collar trusses. Two arches have been blocked. Attached to the southeast angle is a gabled entry to the courtyard, arched with a coped gable and linked to a square stone stack on each side. Original gates have been preserved on the end wall of the east range. The south range continues westward with an arched window (brick-arched) and a door, a tall arched door, and an arched cart entry, all featuring stone voussoirs, followed by two small doors. This range originally functioned as a stable, loose boxes, a coach house, and a tack room.
