Description
Capel Mair is a building constructed of rubble stone with some red brick dressings and a slate roof. The lateral facade features two arched doorways with stone voussoirs, a large arched center window with a recessed red brick head, and two gallery lights above the doors, which have red brick cambered heads. There is also a small plaque with a red brick shallow-arched head positioned between the doors and windows. The doors and windows were replaced in the mid-20th century, featuring ledged doors with sidelights and plate glass in fanlights, a main window with a radiating-bar head, and 8-pane horned sashes for the gallery lights. The center plaque is made of slate, arch-headed, and includes an inscription in a bordered roundel, indicating a date of 1825 and a rebuilding date of 1845. The building has slate sills, a stone right end wall, and a roughcast left wall, each with a gallery window featuring stone voussoirs.
Inside, the woodwork is painted and grained, with the gallery likely dating from the 1860s, while the pews may date from 1845. The pulpit and great seat are from the 1860s or later, all designed to match in a grained finish. The gallery is three-sided with a plain cornice and a panelled front consisting of long panels alternating with square panels. There is a center clock and five plain iron columns. The interior features panelled box pews, with two blocks in the center and raked pews positioned at right angles under the galleries on each side. The gallery pews are also raked. The great seat is curved with framed boarded panels, and the pulpit has steps on each side, with turned balusters and ball-finial newels. A similar balustrade is present on the platform beside the projecting three-sided pulpit, which features simplified Gothic tracery in its three panels. The ceiling is a 20th-century addition with plastered beams.
