Description
6 Portland Place is a group of buildings dated 1855, with Nos 2 to 7 likely constructed shortly after. The buildings are designed in a simple classical style, with two storeys, except for No 1, which has three storeys. Each building features three-window fronts and advanced hipped end pavilions. They have rusticated quoins, except for No 6, which has end pilaster strips, and the frontages are finished in scribed render, cement render, and roughcast. The roofs are slate, with wide boarded eaves and a mix of six cement render and two rubble chimney stacks.
The windows are primarily 12-pane sash windows, except for the ground floors of Nos 1 and 7, which have 16-pane windows. No 1 features lintels, while Nos 2 to 7 have lugged architraves, some of which include keystones. No 2, formerly the Customs House, has cills and decorative bands. The entrances to Nos 2 to 6 are arched, with No 2 having a rusticated surround, bracketed hoods on Nos 3 and 5, and panelled architraves with keystones on Nos 4 and 6. Nos 1 and 7 have open pedimented doorcases with slender columns. The doors are recessed, with Nos 2 and 4 to 7 having six panels, No 3 having a modern door, and No 1 featuring an eight-panel door. All except No 6 have five-pane fanlights, and Nos 1 and 7 have panelled reveals at their doorways.
The right end wall is plain scribed render, and there are various cross ranges at the rear. The rendered left end wall overlooks the River Aeron and has sash windows and a side entrance. A datestone at the base reads: "Portland House built by Benjamin Evans in 1855."
