Description

Glanhafren is a largely 18th century house, with 19th century additions and alterations, situated facing east. The house is constructed of painted brick with a slate roof. Chimneys are formed of yellow brick and stone, with terracotta eaves cornices. The main range is two storeys high with attics, and features a seven-window front. Advanced wings flank the central part of the house, with a short three-window range extending beyond the right wing. The left-hand cross wing has a hipped roof with gabled dormers to the front and rear, featuring nine-pane sash windows and ornate fretted bargeboards. The main part of the front elevation has paired four-pane sash windows, flush framed within moulded architraves and flat-arched heads, on both floors. A plain string course is visible between the ground and first floors, and a similar band is present on the rear elevation.

The recessed entrance to the main range is positioned between the two wings and comprises a six-panelled door with a flat arched head, flanked by narrow side lights containing sash windows, and a twelve-pane sash window above. A projecting right-hand wing, a 19th-century addition, has single twelve-pane sash windows on each floor and a hipped roof. The original main range extends to the right, with a wide twelve-pane sash window and an eight-pane sash window on the ground floor, and three eight-pane sashes above, all flush framed with flat arched heads.

The rear elevation shows that the southern cross wing and the northern bay appear to be original 18th century fabric, with raised string courses, while the central section looks like a later reconstruction following work in the 19th century.

The south wing retains two early 18th century rooms on the ground floor. The east room is fully furnished with painted wall panelling featuring heavily moulded raised panels, a dado rail, and a cornice. It contains a transverse beam, also panelled, and a corner fireplace with fluted pilasters and a lugged panelled overmantle, along with panelled window shutters. The west room also has a corner fireplace with fluted pilasters and a heavily raised panelled overmantle, a heavy moulded plaster cornice, and reeded plasterwork to the transverse beam. The ceiling features raised plaster motifs – a bird, a fish, and two branches – in each corner. The ‘gun room’ at the north end of the house is similarly panelled, including a bolection moulded fireplace. A 19th-century staircase, designed in 18th century style, is located in the central hall.
