Description

The NW farm range at Home Farm is a multi-purpose building with an L-shaped plan, including an implement store and barn at the northwest end. It is constructed of brick and topped with a slate roof. The segmental-headed windows feature small-pane iron-frame casements with Gothic glazing bars, which are typical of the Abbey Cwmhir Estate.

Facing the yard to the east, there is a cow house that includes two cast iron ridge ventilators. Boarded doors are located to the left of center and at the right end, with three segmental-headed openings that have wooden vents. A corbelled central gabled loft opening is fitted with boarded shutters. Further to the right, there is another boarded door and a metal-framed window beneath wooden lintels. The south gable end has an inserted doorway and a loft opening with wooden shutters. The rear of the cow house features eight small vents, now glazed, along with a segmental-headed window and a doorway at the left end.

The northeast end of the north wing is an addition, distinguished from the original structure by vertical joints. Facing the yard, there are wide boarded doors, and on the north side, a three-light window. To the right, the original range includes three three-light windows, a two-light window, and a boarded door. The gabled implement store that projects at the northwest end is open-fronted and has a weatherboarded gable, with a three-light window in its west side wall.

Attached at a right angle to the south gable end of the implement store is a taller barn. The north wall of the barn features a wide segmental-headed doorway to the right of center, a narrower doorway to the left, and an inserted doorway to the right. The loft has two shuttered openings and diamond-patterned breathers located center-right. The west gable end is clad in corrugated metal sheets and includes the wall of a former lean-to. A former range attached to the south side has mostly collapsed and is now covered by a recent metal shed. The east gable end has a segmental boarded door at the lower left, a similar loft door, and diamond-patterned breathers in the gable.

The rear of the north wing consists of three gabled bays that feature bullseye vents and iron grilles in the gables, segmental-headed doorways in the central and right-hand bays, an inserted window in the central bay, and a wide lintelled doorway in the left-hand bay.
