Description

The archways, gates, and forecourt walls at the principal northwest entrance to Leighton Hall are a grand tripartite entrance portal featuring a central carriage entrance flanked by side arches. Constructed from rock-faced Cefn stone with ashlar dressings, the archways are accompanied by polygonal turrets, which have spiked finials on the inner turrets and orb finials on the outer turrets. The central arch is designed in the Tudor style, showcasing panelling in the spandrels and a hood mould. Above this arch, there is a scroll and a shield adorned with two lions rampant, along with a shaped gable that features a sculpted lion at the apex. On either side of the main arch, there are narrower and simpler Tudor arches, which sit beneath a string course that aligns with the hood mould of the central arch. Above these arches, a blank shield and a gablet sit above embattlements. The inner face of the gateway mirrors this design.

The ornate cast iron gates are designed to sweep up to the sides in the central bay and feature two tiers of railings separated by a transom. The upper tier is styled with Gothic tracery and includes poppy-headed finials, while the lower tier has alternate railings with fleur de lys finials and also displays a heraldic shield. Below the gates is a frieze of Tudor flowers. The gates in the outer bays are similar in style but less ornate. The flanking walls are S-shaped in plan and feature a pierced parapet with a cusped trail beneath a ramped coping. Intermediate piers have saddleback copings and culminate in taller octagonal piers topped with conical caps and ball finials.
