Description

Pen y Rhiw with adjoining farm ranges

A symmetrical three-window two-storey house of rubble stone under a slate roof with wide boarded eaves and a stone end stack to the left. The building features large dressed stone quoins and jambs. The windows are small two-light casements with stone sills beneath flat-arched heads of stone voussoirs with raised keystones. A lean-to timber porch to the centre has a corrugated roof and encloses a planked door with a head matching the windows.

To the left is the service unit, also two storeys but lower in height. It has a late twentieth-century stable door with a small light to the left and a two-light casement to the right, both with segmental brick heads. A top-hung window is positioned at the centre of the upper storey. The windows have blue brick sills. The south gable end and rear of the service unit have no openings, though a skylight is set into the rear roof pitch. The rear of the house has a small window with a stone head at each storey, offset to the left on the lower storey and to the right on the upper storey.

The north gable of the house is of red brick, with a lower three-door byre adjoining. The byre is of rubble stone with stable doors and appears to have been rebuilt above door head level, where louvred timber panels are set beneath a slate roof. A central opening was probably for a loft hatch. A large lean-to extends to the rear. The long range adjoining the byre sits at a slight angle. It is of stone with large quoins and brick to the upper level, under a corrugated iron roof. A cart bay to the left has a wicket gate. Full-height double planked doors serve the barn with a ventilation slit to the right. A stable door with concrete lintel is positioned at the far right, leading into the stable. A door to the gable end has a loft hatch above it, and a single planked door serves the rear.

Interior of the main house

The front door opens into the hall, which has a large stone fireplace at the left end with a segmental stone lintel of large voussoirs and a keystone. A bakeoven with a flat head is set into the right jamb. A dog-leg wooden staircase in the right corner turns away from the fireplace. The ceiling features a large central spine beam with narrow chamfer and exposed joists. Inner rooms lie to the right of the doorway. The left room contains a salting slab supported on brick piers and exposed joists to the ceiling. Flagstone floors and planked doors are throughout. A door to the left of the hall fireplace leads into the kitchen, which also has a spine beam with narrow chamfer. A small fireplace backs onto the hall fireplace and shares a similar stone head, though it is now blocked. To its left is an area of brick infill containing a bakeoven. Wood planked floors are fitted upstairs.

Interior of the service range and farm buildings

Inside the byre is a central feedwalk with planked partitions and a loft above. Interior walls are of stone except for the brick dividing wall between house and byre. Two rear doors with timber lintels lead into a lean-to. The barn in the added range is three-bay with a central wagon bay and flagstone floor, a small rear doorway, and low planked partitions to the sides supporting open timber-framing. The roof is pegged with queen struts. The gables are of brick with narrow timber struts. A doorway at the right end, now infilled with blockwork, formerly led into the stable. The stable remains open but originally contained two stalls with a manger and hayrack to the left.
