Description

This is an asymmetrical group of buildings, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, comprising a mill at the north end, Mill Cottage in the centre, and the Old Post Office at the south end. The buildings represent group value as a historic industrial and domestic complex.

The two-and-a-half storey mill is constructed of rubble stone with dressed stone detailing and a slate roof. It has arched openings accentuated by prominent keystones. The central entrance now has a replacement door under a stone lintel, and a replacement segmental-headed window is to the left, with a wide arch providing access to a through passage on the right. The upper storey features central boarded doors with glazed panels, and three-light windows to the right and left. A blocked loft opening is visible in the right gable end, above the roofline of Mill Cottage. The left gable end contains the wheel chamber, which has been altered with an added roof and doorway, likely during its conversion to electrical generation.

The rear elevation of the mill shows a wide passage archway on the left, with two blocked doorways to the right. A three-light segmental-headed window is present in the upper storey on the left. A lean-to structure, with an opening under a segmental lintel and a corrugated iron roof, abuts a stone wall that formerly supported the head race. Adjacent to the lean-to is a corner brick fireplace belonging to a now-demolished range. The head race wall features a round arch with freestone voussoirs and a keystone inscribed with the date 1848.

Mill Cottage is set slightly back from the mill and is a two-storey, two-window cottage built of rubble stone with dressed stone detailing, a slate roof, and a brick stack in the rear slope. Openings are characterised by segmental heads and keystones. The central boarded door has a glazed panel and a two-pane overlight. Three-light windows are positioned to the right and left, with the right-hand window being shorter. The upper storey has smaller, two-light windows. The rear has added lean-tos on both the right and left sides. In the upper storey, a two-light small-pane casement window is on the left, with similar, but single-light, windows in the centre and to the right. The right gable end, visible behind the mill, is constructed of brick.

The Old Post Office is set at a right angle to Mill Cottage and is wider than the cottage. It is a two-storey, three-window house built of rubble stone with flat arches and keystones, larger tooled quoins, and a slate roof with projecting eaves. A stone stack is located on the right, and a roughcast stack is on the left. The symmetrical south-facing front has a central entrance, with a boarded door incorporating a glazed panel, flanked by two-light casement windows. A George V letter box is situated below the left-hand window. The upper storey has replacement windows in original openings. The left gable end is slate-hung and contains two two-light small-pane casements with segmental heads in the upper storey. The right gable end has a small window low down on the left, a two-light upper-storey casement window, and an added lean-to on the right.
