Description

The Wynnstay Column is a colossal stone fluted Doric column, built in the 18th century, topped with a large bronze urn decorated with goat heads. It stands on a square stone base that features a single doorway with a moulded stone architrave and a late 20th-century steel door. On the northeast side of the base, there is a rectangular shallow recess that originally held an inscribed plaque reading "FILIO OPTIMO MATER - EHEU - SUPERSTES," which translates to "To the best of sons, his mother who - alas - survives him dedicates this." The column rises over 35 meters high and contains a spiral staircase leading to a railed walkway at the top.
