Description

8 Lloyds Crescent is a group of eight houses built in the Arts and Crafts style, featuring picturesque symmetry and traditional neo-vernacular materials. The houses have roughcast walls, steep slate roofs with overhanging eaves, and brick stacks with recessed panels. Although the original small-paned casement windows have been replaced with small-paned uPVC windows, the original boarded doors with small-paned glazed upper panels remain intact.

The outer blocks, consisting of houses numbered 1 to 3 and 6 to 8, are symmetrically arranged, with the overall design taking precedence over individual characteristics. Each outer gable is asymmetrical, with inner roof slopes that extend down to form hipped canopy porches supported by curved struts. There are small windows lighting the entrances in the short returns of these gables. Each gable features a long three-light window on the lower storey, a shorter window above, and aligned windows in the outer bays of the five-window range between the gables. The central section of this range includes one dwelling in each block (numbers 2 and 7), which is tightly symmetrical, featuring a doorway beneath a hipped canopy porch with a single side-light to the left. Flanking three-light windows are present on each floor, with a small two-light casement window above the entrance, set beneath a gablet displaying the monogram 'M' and the dates 1933 and 1934 for houses 7 and 2, respectively.

Houses 4 and 5 form the central block of the group and are also tightly symmetrical, based on the outer gables, which flank a two-window range. Each gable has a doorway offset to the inner side, again with a hipped canopy porch and a narrow side-light on one side only. The ground floor features a long three-light window, with a shorter three-light window above and a narrow window over the entrance. The central two-window range has similar long ground floor windows and shorter three-light windows beneath raking dormers above.
