Description
Taylor's Shaft Engine House is a two-storey brick engine house situated on a sloping site, currently in a derelict condition with its slate roof missing. The southwest gable end features a central round-headed doorway at the basement level, while the main storey has two round-headed windows that still have their wooden frames, although the glazing bars are missing. Both side walls include pairs of round-headed windows set back from the ends, and on the right side, there is also a lintelled doorway at the right end. At the rear, where the ground level is higher, there is a central round-headed window flanked by tall and narrow lintelled openings designed for winding cables.
Inside, a brick and concrete engine bed is present, which retains holding down bolts and related sockets for a horizontally mounted engine. The basement consists of a central passage that provides access to the bases of these holding down bolts. The four-bay roof still features its king-post trusses with diagonal struts, which are supported by shallow wall shafts.
