Description
Pen-isa'r-Glascoed Farmhouse is a substantial three-unit farmhouse, built partly as one storey and partly as two storeys plus an attic, oriented east to west. It features a two-storey staircase wing to the north and single-storey side extensions.
The farmhouse is constructed from local limestone, which is axe-dressed and uncoursed, and has large lintels above the windows in the main range. The roof is restored slate, although it retains some small slates on the upper part of the rear slope, and there is a tall mid-chimney. All gables are topped with stepped copings.
On the south elevation, which faces the approach and the garden, the chimney divides the façade into an unequal two-bay section on the left and a single-bay section with the original through passage on the right. There are two through-eaves dormer windows, each with two-light timber-mullion windows, one on either side. The first storey has a group of two two-light windows and one three-light timber mullion and transom window on the left, along with one two-light and one three-light similar window at ground level to the left, one three-light window on the right, and one in the return elevation to the right (east). Each end gable features a small two-light window that retains its stone mullion. The rear fenestration has been altered.
The ground floor of the house is at several levels, noticeably descending towards the west. The stairs are located within the north wing. At the center of the house is a hall with a large chimney; to the west of this area is a timber screen made of post and panel, which bears the inscription "Anno Domini 1570 Oedranybyd 5552," referring to the year in the Hebrew calendar. There is a doorway in this partition with a carved Tudor lintel that includes feathers and the letters EK, which are thought to represent Edward and Katherine Lloyd.
On the first storey, there is said to be a mantel with heavy corbels, and in the roof, an arch-braced truss is located at the east side of the main chimney.
