Description

Plas Clough is an Elizabethan, storeyed gentry house built in a U-plan with a partially open court at the rear. It is constructed of early brick, featuring 19th or early 20th century roughcast elevations, and has steeply-pitched, slated roofs with staged brick chimneys that have simple cornicing. The main elevation, facing the road, consists of five bays and is nearly symmetrical, with a three-bay central range flanked by large cross-wings that have flush stepped gables at the front.

The central entrance bay includes a storeyed porch, which previously had a stepped gable but now features plain bargeboards. The porch has an open lower stage and a projecting upper storey supported by Tuscan columns made of sandstone. A recessed plaque displays the painted arms adopted by Clough, which are the arms of the Holy Sepulchre. In the gable apex, there are iron tie-plates featuring the initials RC and the date 1567. The porch also contains a four-light multi-pane window and a 18th century six-panel door within a wooden case that has four panelled pilasters and eight sidelights.

On either side of the porch are paired, unhorned sash windows, with 12 panes on the ground floor and 9 panes on the first floor. The gabled wings also feature paired 12-pane sashes on both floors. The left-hand return, or south elevation, has additional sash windows, including four tall early 19th century sash windows on the left. There is a single-storey slated addition to the north, slightly set back from the facade, which has a 12-pane window with a cambered head and a boarded door to the right.

The main front range is noted to have arch-braced roof trusses.
