Description
The Rock Chapel is a single-cell chapel built from local axe-dressed coursed limestone masonry, featuring a small steeple at the west end. It has a slate roof and a slate-hung spire, with a rounded east end. The chapel is illuminated by seven lancet windows, which are framed in common stonework, and low buttresses alternate with the window positions. A corbel course runs along the eaves.
The entrance is located at the west end, accessed through an outer pointed archway made of common stonework and an inner pointed arch that holds a boarded door hung on wrought-iron hinges. Above the entrance, there is a corbel course with two offsets, leading to a two-stage tower. The lower stage has a trefoil-headed recess that once held a statue, while the upper stage features belfry lights. Above this is a cornice supported by corbels, topped by a spire with an iron cross finial.
Inside, the chapel has a plain interior with exposed roof timbers. The roof is supported by closely set scissor-braced main trusses and features a cambered tie beam.
