Description
The Pier, which includes Stone Lodge, Pier End Pavilions, kiosks, and the remains of the Pier Pavilion, is a seaside pier featuring iron piles that support a wooden deck. This deck is adorned with a cast iron balustrade that has an Islamic pattern, along with iron lamp standards on the balustrade. The pier extends straight northeast from a stone lodge on Happy Valley Road to a polygonal platform at the seaward end, with modern landing stage platforms. There is also a later 19th-century extension that runs back from the lodge parallel to the shore.
The Stone Lodge is constructed of grey stone and is a single-storey building with a slate roof. On either side of the pier, there are four rectangular kiosks, each featuring a shallow-pitched roof with deep eaves supported by iron brackets, boarded stall risers, square windows, and a central doorway facing the pier square. Additionally, there are two longer kiosks located just southwest of the broader end platform, which serve as public conveniences. Near the entrance on Happy Valley Road, there is an octagonal kiosk designed in a similar style.
At the end platform of the pier, there is a central large polygonal pavilion. At the northeast end of this pavilion, there is a taller octagonal block topped with an ornate cupola, finial, and cresting, along with decorative iron brackets at the eaves and iron columns. Moving southwest, there is a lower section with a shallow roof that includes dormers and a lantern, as well as a verandah and iron stall risers featuring dolphin reliefs. Flanking the central pavilion are two hexagonal pavilions that share the same style but lack the ornate cupolas. At the landward end, near the southern entrance, ornate cast iron columns and a staircase remain from the Pier Pavilion. Kiosks and stalls located along the pier to the south of the Grand Hotel appear to be modern.
