Description
This is a two-story, castellated police station constructed in the 20th century. It is built with grey pebble-dashed walls accented by dressed-stone quoins, dressings, and bands, sitting on a battered, rendered plinth. The steep slate roof is concealed behind an embattled parapet, with coped gables featuring moulded kneelers, and end stacks of brick on stone bases.
The three-bay front is asymmetrical, with an advanced gabled bay recessed on the left side, topped with a crow-stepped gable featuring a blank shield and pinnacle. A string course runs between the two floors. The central entrance is framed by a heavy moulded surround and a replacement boarded door, positioned beneath an older overlight. Mullioned windows contain two-pane margin-lit sashes on the ground floor, with shorter, first-floor windows of a 1 over 2 pane configuration. The left-hand bay has two-light windows, while the central bay incorporates an offset two-light first-floor window. The right-hand bay features a two-light ground-floor window and a single-light first-floor window. Between the floors, the central and right-hand bays have a wide inscription tablet displaying "Police Station" in raised lettering. A cast-iron street sign is positioned above the ground-floor window on the left-hand bay.
The left-hand gable end, facing Bangor Road, has single-light windows on the outer sides. The right-hand gable end, facing York Place, has windows on each story, with sashes incorporating two lower panes. Set slightly back from this gable end is a lower, two-story, three-window wing, sharing similar details but lacking the embattlement. This wing has sashes of a 1 over 2 pane design, a panel door located left of center, and two-light windows, with the exception of a single-light window on the upper right side. A lower and shorter two-story, one-window rear wing, also set slightly back from the main range's gable end and facing Bangor Road, has small sash windows. The first-floor window of this wing has two panes in its lower sash.
The rear of the building is enclosed by a tall pebble-dashed yard wall with concrete embattlements and rendered quoins. This wall, facing York Place, incorporates a panel door.
The forecourt includes a ramp on the right side of the entrance and stone steps leading to square, panelled piers capped with shallow pyramids. A pebble-dashed parapet wall is topped with freestone coping.
