Description
Great Ormes Head Lighthouse is a strong square, two-storey building constructed in the 19th century, featuring castellated design and rusticated rubble walls that were originally whitewashed. It has a flat roof with axial stacks that have corbelled caps. The main elevation on the south-east side has three widely spaced bays topped with an embattled parapet that includes machicolation. The window openings are chamfered, with two on the first floor and two below. The central bay on the ground floor has a doorway with a plaque above it that reads, "This lighthouse was erected by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board 1862 G.F. Lyster, Engineer."
On the north-west elevation, there is a small canted full-height projection that overlooks the sea, housing the lantern room with a former telegraph room above. The lantern features a segmental bay window with vertical glazing bars, situated on a platform surrounded by cast-iron railings. Each return elevation includes a small yard that is enclosed by a high machicolated curved wall.
