Description
The lychgate to the west of St. Michael's Church dates from 1756 and is situated within the churchyard boundary of a small late-medieval church, likely built on an ancient site. This simple structure is made of rubble and features east and west gables topped with an old slatestone roof.
At both ends, there are simple openings with exposed timber lintels. The western opening, which is the outer entrance, has a replaced lintel, while the inner lintel is stopped-chamfered and inscribed with the initials RR RW and the date 1756, along with some later, unrelated graffiti. The eastern opening retains its original, un-inscribed outer lintel. Inside, there are small rubble wall benches on either side, softwood purlins and rafters, some of which have been replaced, and a concreted floor.
This lychgate is included for its historical significance as a dated mid-18th century structure and has group value with St. Michael's Church.
