Description

Penamen Ucha Farm is a model farmyard that includes a house, built with rubble masonry and rock-faced freestone dressings. The roofs are moderately pitched and covered with slate, featuring oversailing eaves, deep verges, and bargeboards.

The house is located at the center of the northern range and is two stories tall with three windows, constructed from snecked masonry. It has an advanced gablet at the center, which features an inset rampant lion. A sill band rises under the windows, and the building has stressed quoins. The windows are modern four-pane designs. A stone staircase leads up from the road, and there are windows on the agricultural buildings flanking the house. The yard side has a plain three-window rubble elevation with stone lintels and Victorian sash windows. There is a low forecourt wall.

To the right and left of the house are single-story agricultural ranges. The right range includes a dairy and an open-fronted shelter shed supported by stone piers. A taller implement shed is positioned at a right angle to the eastern end, also open-fronted with stone piers. The left range consists of a former carpentry shop, calf pens, and shelter sheds, which feature plank doors and slatted vent windows. Additionally, there is a two-story cartshed with a granary above it, positioned at a right angle to the western end. This structure has a dormer doorway to the right, three arched cart entries, and a loft door beneath a hood on the gable end.

In the center of the yard are two long rectangular manure stores with stone bases and an open upper timberwork structure topped with a curved corrugated iron roof, which was formerly gabled.

At the center of the southern range is a two-story chaff house and engine room, featuring a fleche-like ventilator and a gablet over the loading door, which is flanked by loft windows. It has a sill band and a cambered central doorway with windows on either side. Storage barns step down to either side, with lean-tos at the front, ventilator grilles under the eaves, and dormer doorways at the rear. The single-story ranges on the left and right include stables on the right and a cowhouse on the left, both featuring ridge ventilators, plank doors, and slatted vent windows. Taller Dutch barns adjoin the eastern and western ends, open to the yard and supported by stone piers, and retain their original doors, windows, and fittings.
