Description
Penamen Ucha Farm is a model farmyard that includes a house and dates from the 19th century. The buildings are constructed from rubble masonry with rock-faced freestone dressings. They feature moderately pitched slate roofs with oversailing eaves, deep verges, and bargeboards.
The house is located at the center of the northern range and is two stories high with three windows, built of snecked masonry. It has an advanced gablet at the center, which displays an inset rampant lion. A sill band rises beneath the windows, and the building has stressed quoins. The windows are modern four-pane designs. A stone staircase leads up from the road, and there are windows on the agricultural buildings flanking the house. The yard elevation is a plain three-window rubble design with stone lintels and Victorian sash windows. There is a low forecourt wall.
To the right and left of the house are single-story agricultural ranges. The right range includes a dairy and an open-fronted shelter shed supported by stone piers. A taller implement shed is positioned at right angles to the eastern end, also open-fronted with stone piers. The left range consists of a former carpentry shop, calf pens, and shelter sheds, featuring plank doors and slatted vent windows. There is a two-story cartshed with a granary above, located at right angles to the western end, which has a dormer doorway to the right, three arched cart entries, and a loft door under a hood on the gable end.
In the center of the yard, there are two long rectangular manure stores with stone bases and an open upper timberwork structure topped with a curved corrugated iron roof, which was formerly gabled.
The southern range contains a two-story chaff house and engine room, featuring a fleche-like ventilator and a gablet over the loading door, which is flanked by loft windows. It has a sill band and a cambered central doorway with windows on either side. Storage barns step down on either side, with lean-tos at the front, ventilator grilles under the eaves, and dormer doorways at the rear. Single-story ranges are located to the left and right, with stables on the right and a cowhouse on the left. These buildings have ridge ventilators, plank doors, and slatted vent windows. Taller Dutch barns are positioned at right angles to the eastern and western ends, open to the outside of the yard, and retain their original doors, windows, and fittings.
