Description

Penamen Ucha Farm is a model farmyard that includes a house, built with rubble masonry and rock-faced freestone dressings. The buildings feature moderately pitched slate roofs with oversailing eaves, deep verges, and bargeboards.

The house is located at the center of the northern range and is two stories tall with three windows, constructed from snecked masonry. It has an advanced gablet at the center that displays an inset rampant lion. A sill band rises under the windows, which are modern four-pane designs. A stone staircase leads up from the road, and the agricultural buildings on either side of the house have windows that complement its design. The yard side has a plain three-window rubble elevation with stone lintels and Victorian sash windows, along with a low forecourt wall.

To the right and left of the house are single-story agricultural ranges. The right side includes a dairy and an open-fronted shelter shed supported by stone piers, while a taller implement shed is positioned at a right angle to the eastern end, also open-fronted with stone piers. The left range consists of a former carpentry shop, calf pens, and shelter sheds, featuring plank doors and slatted vent windows. Additionally, there is a two-story cartshed with a granary above, positioned at a right angle to the western end. This structure has a dormer doorway to the right, three arched cart entries, and a loft door under a hood at the gable end.

In the center of the yard, there are two long rectangular manure stores with stone bases and an open upper timberwork structure, topped with a curved corrugated iron roof that was formerly gabled.

The southern range features a two-story chaff house and engine room, which includes a fleche-like ventilator and a gablet over the loading door, flanked by loft windows and a sill band. The central doorway is cambered and flanked by windows. Storage barns step down on either side, with lean-tos at the front, ventilator grilles under the eaves, and dormer doorways at the rear. Single-story ranges are located to the left and right, with stables on the right and a cowhouse on the left, all featuring ridge ventilators, plank doors, and slatted vent windows. Taller Dutch barns are positioned at right angles to the eastern and western ends, open to the yard and supported by stone piers, retaining their original doors, windows, and fittings.
