Description
The Quarry Incline at Cwm Penmachno is a water balanced incline with two tracks, built across a series of quarry terraces. It is made of slate waste rubble and features two parallel tracks that have a surface of flat slabs. The incline rises to a height of approximately 5 meters from the ground, although this height varies according to the terracing of the quarry, and it has a width of about 4 meters. The sides of the incline are supported by deep slate rubble buttresses that extend above the trackway. At the lower section, there is an archway that is around 2 meters high and wide, constructed with drystone slate rubble voussoirs. At the top of the incline, there is a stepped platform that includes the remains of a former drumhouse, with steps leading up to the platform from ground level on the west side. The incline above the former drumhouse platform continues in a fragmentary state and is not considered of special interest.
