Description

Salem Chapel and caretaker's cottage is a linear range consisting of a 4-bay chapel and a 2-storey, 2-window chapel house, with a single-storey service wing at the rear. The building features coursed boulder construction, with large stones used as quoins and lintels, and a slate roof that has a narrow rectangular gable stack on the right (east) gable of the chapel house. Originally, the chapel had a 3-window range with doorways in between; however, the left-hand doorway has been blocked, and an additional door and window were added when the chapel was extended. The doors are boarded, and the windows, which are set high in the walls, are large 12-pane hornless sashes with slate sills. Similar windows are found along the rear wall of the chapel.

The chapel house is slightly set back from the chapel, with its doorway located to the left under a shallow overlight. To the right is a replacement timber casement window with 16 panes, designed to resemble the original unequal sash window. The first floor features unequal 12-pane sashes, all with slate sills. There is also a modern casement window on the east gable and modern windows at the rear.

The interior fittings of the chapel are contemporary with its construction. The pulpit is located at the east end and has a simple raking panelled front beneath a moulded rail. Access to the pulpit is via a flight of stairs with stick balusters and a plain handrail. Box pews surround the pulpit, and to the west, the ranks of pews are raked. The walls are plain, featuring a continuous hook rail above the pulpit under a moulded cornice. The roof consists of three bays with partially exposed king post trusses.

The interior of the chapel house was not inspected during the survey.
