Description
The barn at Gwanas Fawr is a long post-medieval structure built of cyclopean boulders, likely dating from the second half of the 16th century. It features an inappropriate modern slate roof with skylights on both sides. The entrance is off-centre to the left, with a corresponding entrance at the rear, which has stable and boarded doors. There are ventilation slits in bays 1 to 3 that are splayed inwardly, and a square window at the rear (bay 4) with plain glazing. A gable entrance is located on the north side, with an additional ventilation slit above it. To the left, there is a later two-bay extension that is slightly set back, featuring a 19th-century roof with the rear pitch covered in old slates. The entrance on the right side is off-centre and has a modern door.
Inside, the barn has six bays with original trusses that are pegged upper crucks, complete with tie beams and curved elements, all roughly chamfered. It includes two tiers of trenched purlins, mostly original, while the rafters and ridge-piece are modern. The two northernmost bays are stepped down, and a rubble wall has been inserted between bays 3 and 4 at tie beam level, which is cut in the centre.
