Description

Pont Beddgelert is a triple-arched road bridge made of rubble, which has been widened on the downstream side. It is built on a cobbled base that extends beyond the bridge on both the upstream and downstream sides. The arches are formed with rough-dressed voussoirs, and the arch-rings are made of narrow stones that project outward. The central arch is the largest, flanked by a slightly smaller northern arch and a smaller flood-arch to the south. The carriageway has a gentle hump in the center, and each side features a refuge bordered by a triangular cutwater. The rubble parapets are topped with long slatestone capping stones and are splayed at the approaches.

On the inner downstream splay at the northern end, there are inset milestones made of incised slate, likely from the late 19th century or early 20th century. The left milestone reads: 'To Penygwryd 7; to Llanberis 13, to Capel Curig ..[indistinct]'. The right milestone is inscribed: 'To Portmadoc Miles 7 1/2'.

On the northern side of the bridge, the splayed parapets extend beyond the approaches as low rubble walls that run parallel to the river on both sides. These walls have rough coping stones and stretch for about 100 meters, with an average height of 0.60 meters on the roadside and approximately 3 meters on the river side. There is a squinch at the angle with the bridge on the downstream side. The downstream southern side also connects to a rebuilt rubble wall that extends for a similar distance, with an average height of 1 meter.
