Description

The Former Agricultural Merchants is a three-storey commercial building with warehouses at the rear, dating from the 19th century. It features two gabled bays, with a broad stock brick bay on the left and a narrower bay on the right made of snecked masonry. The building has slate roofs and bargeboards, with Victorian sash windows in the gables. The left bay has cambered brick voussoirs, while the right bay has a stone lintel. A plain cornice runs above the shop windows on the first floor of the brick bay, which also has plain pilasters. There are three-light shop windows flanking a central two-light window, and a Victorian sash window in the stone bay to the right. The ground floor of the brick bay has a shop front with a missing blind box and plain pilasters, featuring three-light shop windows and a central doorway with double four flush panel doors. The stone bay to the right has a similar doorway with a stone lintel.

The rear elevation facing Smithfield Lane is also three storeys with two gabled sections, constructed of coursed rubble masonry. It has steeply pitched slate roofs with close verges. There is a loading door on the second floor to the right, which is a plank door with a stone lintel, topped with a gabled winch hood that is slate hung. The left bay features a Victorian sash window, while both bays have loading doors on the first floor, which are plank doors with stone lintels. The ground floor on the right has a broad doorway with plank double doors that have vents at the top and a deep stone lintel. The left bay is similar but includes a window at the extreme left, with a stone lintel and sill, though it has modern glazing.
